Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is associated with high mortality rates and medical costs. it is reported that each year in the United States, at least 2 million people are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and at least 23,000 people die annally as direct result of these infections. Many more people die from other conditions that are complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection.

The world Health Organization(WHO) featured AMR on World Health Day 2011 and called upon the international community to devote global effort toward AMR under the "One Health" approch, which addresses both human and animal health.
